February 26, 2016 - Class #7

Can you believe we're halfway through this semester already?  Keep up the good work!  Check out our Hall of Fame with lots more 28 day-ers on it.

NOTE:  Get this book:  The Other Side of Heaven by John Groberg and read it by April 22. There are lots of used copies starting at .01 + 3.99 shipping.  The book is even better than the movie!  Notice how Elder Groberg lives his life - What thoughts, feelings and actions (choices he makes) does he have, and how does that affect his results?

Brain Book:  Read chapter 5 this week.

If you got it once is it important to keep doing it?  Absolutely!  The more you practice these habits, the more they become routines, and eventually rituals. They become a part of who you are.  A ritual is something you do every day pretty much without thinking about it and if you don't do it, it feels funny to you.  Create those POWER rituals in your life.  These little actions may not seem like much, but they build who you are.  They help you become the person God wants you to be and to find and fulfill your purpose in life.  That is a TRUTH!  So keep moving on your 28 days!

Sow a thought and you reap an action

Sow an act and you reap a habit

Sow a habit and you reap a character

Sow a character and you reap a destiny.

 -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today we discussed how your body is trying to send you messages but you can't always hear those messages if your mind is filled with chatter, if you're not alignment with your core values / the gospel, or if you're just not listening.  How can you recognize what is stopping you from getting what you want?

Thoughts lead to Emotions which lead to Actions which lead to your results.

Look at what you are thinking and feeling.  You may be able to find areas where your thoughts and feelings aren't in alignment with your core, your true self, the spirit.  But often we have the blinders on ourselves and we think we are right SO much, that we can't see where we are out of alignment.  When we get frustrated with others, it's usually because there is something in ourselves that we need to change, but we end up blaming it on the other people.  That gives us poor results.  But if we can look at ourselves and discover what we need to change about ourselves, our results will get better.

We become disconnected from our bodies/temples when we aren't in alignment with God. When we  figure out how we can get into more alignment, we get more messages from the spirit.  We don't have to be perfect, we just need to be listening and acting on those thoughts.

Another way to find out where we are stopping ourselves is to listen to our bodies.  Our bodies can send us messages of what we need to do to change.  Here are two action items you can try:

(1) Write a letter to your Body
Part 1:  Write a letter to your body. Start off with, “Dear Body.”  Then write what comes to your mind.  Be open and don’t hold back. Tell your body how you feel about it.  You can ask it questions if you like. Sign it at the end.  This can be an exercise you try in your power journal.

Part 2:  Next comes the very interesting part.   Write another letter, but this time write it to yourself from our body.  Start it with “Dear (your name)”.  Write what message your body has for you.  Your brain may tell you this is weird, but if you want answers, just go with it.

(2) Visualization / The Body Scan

Get very still and focused. First focus on your breathing.  If your mind wanders, acknowledge it, and then refocus yourself.  Practice being PRESENT - no judgment, just notice.

Try listening to meditation music such as this (first song I played in class).  Or the video below:

Picture the light that comes in to you from the sun (the Son), down through your head and into your body.  Go through your body parts and just notice.  Listen for any messages.

Ask your body:
(1) Is there anyone I need to forgive?  Whoever comes to mind, ask your body to forgive that person and let go of any grudges.  Then picture yourself handing your grudge to the savior, who will take it for you.  Next replace it with love.
(2) Is there anything I need to repent of?  Your body knows if you need to repent.  You can’t keep secrets from your body.  Then picture yourself handing your sins to the savior and allowing him to take your burden.  Picture it being replaced with love.
(3) Is there anyone I have wronged?  Sometimes we might not know if we’ve caused someone hurt, but our spirit knows.   If you feel tension in your chest, that could be caused from pain you’ve caused another person.  Hand it over to the savior, replace it with love.
(4) Is there someone I need to make amends to?  Our bodies know the truth.  We may feel pain, tension, guilt, sick to our stomachs when we think of someone we have wronged.  Repent, turn it over to the savior. Write down what you need to do.

Who do you need to write a kind note to?  Kind notes bring joy to both of you!

February 19, 2016 - Class #6

This week we watched a Ted Talk about the power of being yourself.  What does it mean to you to be yourself?  Who is your true self and how are you hiding that?

(Warning:  There is a swear word repeated several times in her irish accent - our apologies!)

What three words would you use to describe the real you?  That is you!

February 12, 2015 - Class #5

Congrats to our 28 day-ers! We had 8 this week add to the Hall of Fame! Thanks to Taylor for being such a good sport in our demonstration and to Andrew for making it happen. Why are you fighting? Who is your team? Satan’s Isolation: Negative Self Talk
-- What voices do you hear?
-- Find it / Flip it

Here’s what Satan doesn’t want us to know or believe.
-- What’s your take a way?
-- How long before Chy started to become her normal self?
-- What can you personally do?

We are all on the same team. God’s team. Our team is winning. We have to decide are we going to stay on the winning team?
-- Brandon said while taking the missionary discussions Spencer was always by his side, answering questions.
-- What’s the power of one individual? Brandon said he knows that I’m a leader now.
-- You are a leader too. God wants you to lead something. If that be leading yourself with good choices, being an example or reaching out to others.

Let's take a moment. Realize you are not alone in this journey. You make a difference.
  • Ask yourself -- What does God want me to do today or throughout the week?
  • I will --

Look at the questions in the lower right hand corner. If you have time take a moment to answer those questions. Don’t rush the process. Feel what the spirit is trying to tell you, what God is trying to tell you.

Reach out to leaders of your team -
-- Who are your leaders?
Parents, Church leaders (adult/youth), Mentors here at ASA, Student
        Council, Adult family members

Reach out to fellow teammates
-- Who are your teammates?
   Friends, siblings,

Let other teammates help you
-- How can they help?
-- How can you help? - More often than not, when we are serving others, it’s not about that person, it’s really about us.
-- How we get to discover our potential, our greatness, our purpose
-- When we make a difference for one person, it’s never one person because as you can see in Brandon’s story - he baptized someone else. As you can see with Chy -- hundreds of people were affected, not just those directly involved but those who saw it first hand, while it was happening and now possibly millions as we hear their story on social media and the news. People all over the world felt something by their example and a little said was planted to do good.

-- Here’s the big question -- what are you going to do? Look at your paper. Is this going to be just another Friday at ASA or will you go home and follow through with what you wrote.
-- And if you didn’t write anything. Will you remember what you felt here.
-- Will you have the courage to ask? Heavenly Father what would you have me do today?

May we remember, we are never alone. Heavenly Father is with us always. We matter. You matter and together we can share with others they matter too. Live your life today, as a member of God's team. Let your light shine and go do something good!

February 5, 2016 - Class #4

Congrats to all the people who made it into the Hall of Fame this week and last!

We discussed vision boards again this week.  Do you have yours up? Here is a planning sheet if you haven't thought of your goals yet.  Make sure you choose SMART goals so you know when the goals have been accomplished (Get strong is not a smart goal.  Lift weights for 10 minutes a day 5 days a week is a smart goal because you can measure it.)

Look at your vision board for 3 minutes morning and night (20 seconds per picture.)  We want to hear what you get off your vision board!

War Room Principles
  • Shared ideas with us how to pray
  • Reminded us of who the real enemy is
  • Invited us to forgive more, respect others, be patient, kind & loving

Often times we think our family members know we love them, but Pres. Monson asks us not to assume that, but instead show daily our love.

In keeping with this month of being Valentine’s Day -- We watched 2 videos to give us ideas of how we can show love for our family & friends.

Though presents are nice -- acts of service, kind words, doing something together, making something with your hands or building memories are equally and sometimes more important to the person depending on their love language.

After watching these two videos, fill in the "God's Love" sheet and bring it back on Friday! Show it to your team captain and you can get a treat.

Do the 14 day kindness challenge (either as part of your WIN goals or not) and get a specialty bead to add to your keychain!

January 29, 2016 - Class #3

This week we finished watching War Room and discussed loving others.

Inspiring Story - Love thy Neighbor - read this great story!

May we consider Heavenly Father is watchful over all things. Even the details. Sometimes it is difficult to see that with our mortal eyes, depending on how quickly our day passes or how stressed we may be.

I wonder how different our lives may be, if we could open our hearts to the idea that every person who is placed in our lives -- there is purpose and meaning. I wonder how we may look at them differently, treat them differently. Maybe even love them differently.

After watching these 2 videos consider asking yourself the following questions throughout the week.

  • Who can I love more today/this week?
  • How can I love (                      ) more?
  • What are some ways Heavenly Father has shown me, He loves me?
  • How can I love myself more?  How can I love Him more?
  • I will commit in doing this week …..

Heavenly Father wants us to be more aware of how much He loves us. He wants us to feel loved and know that we are loved. He wants the people who are in our lives to be touched by His love through us. That can be simple a smile, prayer, hug, service, visit ….

I know as we strive to see more of God’s love in our life, we will see more ways we can share His love with others.

May your week be filled with love.
